Earth Penetration Radar Imaging System

The Earth Penetration Radar Imaging System (EPRIS) has been developed by the Coleman Research Corporation (CRC). It is a non-intrusive sensing and imaging equipment, using frequency stepped radar technology, and synthetic aperture imaging algorithms. It has the ability to locate and detect buried objects, (mines, ordnance delivered by precision munitions, drums, waste/contaminants, and geological structures/features) up to 2.44 meters below ground, which are then mapped in 3D with high resolution on a computer. EPRIS has been used by the Departments of Defense and of Energy (DOD and DOE), as well as for many archeological surveys.
The Thera Foundation, after receiving a donation by the Thermo Electon Corporation (a world leader in laboratory, analytical, measurement and control instruments and softwares) in 1996, was able to provide the director of the Akrotiri excavation, Professor Christos Doumas, with this significant equipment. Along with Professor Gregorios Tsokas of the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki and a team of experts, the machine was used to locate the ancient port of Akrotiri. This equipment is now being used across Greece, on numerous archeological sites, significantly assisting the archeologists in their efforts.
