Life Sized Photographic Representations of The Thera Wall Paintings
Life-sized 3D photographic reproductions of the original Wall Paintings found in Akrotiri
The Thera Foundation sponsored the life sized 3D photographic reproductions of the original Wall Paintings found in Akrotiri.
The company TRANSFER RELIEF pioneered the development of this technology. The reproductions were created by a process involving the transfer of photographic emulsion, originally developed in France by Kodak Pathe They used the process to create life size, three dimensional reproductions of the famous Lascaux caves, and to recreate the ancient Egyptian tomb of Sennefer with its complete set of frescoes.
From a technical point of view, the process firstly takes the photogram metric measurement of the frescoes. This means the surface is sculptured and reconstituted in 3D. Secondly the photography itself in 20x25 cm color negatives is done. They are then calibrated and developed (scale 1/1). After that, the photographic emulsion is separated. This process gives a very elastic gelatin of the image (1/1000mm thick), which is then transferred to the reconstituted surface. The results are exceptionally realistic and accurate.
The life-sized photographic representations were presented in:
-Germany (1993), “Egyptian-Mynoan relations”; Roemer & Pelizaeus museum (Hildesheim).
-Austria (1994), “Pharaos and Foreigners – Dynasties in the Dark”; Vienna City museum.
