Document Actions
Phase B, 2006 Collaborative Submarine Volcanology Plans for 2006: The Thera Foundation is collaborating with Woods Hole Deep Submergence Laboratory personnel on the 2006 Aegean deep water Archaeology and Volcanology program. This project will involve; mapping using high resolution side scan sonar, mosaic photographing, and in-situ chemical analysis of three sites. The team will survey two wrecks and the Colombo volcano. The wrecks will include a Byzantine wreck off the cost of Halikidiki and Classical wreck near the Island of Kythonos. The Thera Foundation will provided, shore-side resources for the expedition, including laboratories, supplies, logistics, transportation and accommodation. Find below associated links.

The below links and articles reference recent scientific expeditions pertinent to the Thera Foundation’s goal of promoting the study of Santorini in the context of the Mediterranean. Currently under development with: WHOI, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities is a deep sea research expedition to the Colombo submarine volcano north of Santorini.

This project planned for July 2006 will involve; mapping using high resolution side scan sonar, mosaic photographing, and in-situ chemical analysis of three sites. The team will survey two wrecks and the Colombo volcano. The wrecks will include a Byzantine wreck off the cost of Halikidiki and  Classical wreck near the Island of Kythonos.

The team is comprised of  a multidisciplinary international group of investigators including but not limited to;

The 2006 Core American Team

- Project leader Dr. Brendan Foley of WHOI DSL and MIT specializes in two fields: methods and technology for archaeology in deep water, and the history of technology.

- Professor David Mindell of MIT and WHOI DSL is a historian of technology and an electrical engineer. He is the inventor of the SHARPS II precision underwater robotic navigation system.

- Engineer Dr. Richard Camilli of WHOI DSL invented the Gemini mass spectrometer, capable of being mounted on an underwater robot to take chemical measurements in the deep sea.

- Dr. Hanumant Singh of WHOI DSL is a computer scientist and electrical engineer specializing in underwater robots and imaging. He and his graduate students developed the SeaBED robotic underwater vehicle.

- Mechanical Engineering Professor Brian Bingham of Olin College and WHOI DSL is an expert in precision underwater vehicle navigation.

- Mechanical Engineering Professor Ryan Eustice of University of Michigan and WHOI DSL is an expert in underwater navigation and imaging.

The 2006 Core Greek Team

- Katerina Delaporta is the Director of the Ephorate [Department] of Underwater Antiquities within the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. She is an expert in the Byzantine period.

- Dr. Dimitris Sakellariou is a geologist and ocean scientist at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.

- Dr. Dimitris Kourkoumelis is an archaeologist in the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.
