Santorini: Fauna
They are, however, migratory and permanent bird populations that include species such as the grey heron, the little egret, the purple heron, the little riged plover, the yellow wagtail, the kestrel, the crested lark and the turtle dove. Reptiles comprise a significant part of the endemic Cycladic ecology; this ecology is considered one of the most important in Europe. Endangered species have been identified in Santorini which include spitofido and the efios (the largest snake in the Cyclades).
The cave-dwelling Mediterranean seal, one of the most rare and endangered species, is amongst the most notable of the mammals that are associated with the island (Daliana 71).
