Geography of the island of Thera - Santorini
  • Santorini is one of the most southern islands in the Cyclades.
  • It is situated between the island of Ios (approx 1 hour by boat) and Anafi. At 130 nautical miles from Athen's central port Piraeus, it can be reached by boat easily from mainland Greece, but also from the island of Crete (70 nautical miles).
  • The island covers 96 square kilometers  and has a coastline of 69 kilometers long.
  • The permanent population is of 11.381 people.

  • Capital: Fira
  • Main port: Athinios

  • Northeast winds blow throughout the island, keeping therefore the climate rather cool and pleasant even in the hot Greek summers.
  • The west coast ends in a abrupt precipice, lost in the caldera.
  • The caldera is a circular 32 square mile long lagoon, with waters that go up to 400 meters deep. Walking on the cliffs of the beatiful capital, you will see the smaller islet of Aspronisi (uninhabited) and many yachts and tour boats enjoying the view.
