A Santorini Eruption Unknown to Historians

Document Actions
In the National Library at Paris there is a manuscript on parchment, the 'Fonds Latin 4825', from the Liber Insularum Archipelagi of Christoforo Buondelmonti, which contains a rudimentary map of Santorini. Between the island of 'Santilini' and the islet of 'Tirassia' are written the following words:

"HIC AB ANNIS VIII CIRCA NATA EST INSULA IN LONGITUDINE VNIVS GALEE VIDELICET IN 1458,"

which, translated, means:

"In this place some eight years ago was born an island of the length of a galley, that is in 1458."

F. Fouqué (1879) mentions that a reef of rock broke away from the cliffs of Paleakameni on November 25th, 1457.

Unless there is an error in the dates, it would seem that the 1458 occurrence is the sequel to or consequence of the 1457 one.
