Canopy collapse kills visitor to Santorini
The Culture Ministry of Greece ordered the closing of a 3,700-year-old archaeological site on Santorini, one of the Cycladic Islands, after the collapse of a steel protective canopy killed a British tourist and injured seven people.
The site, in Akrotiri, will remain closed while a ministry committee investigates the accident, the deputy culture minister, Petros Tatoulis, said Saturday.
The collapse killed Richard Bennion, 45, of Wales, and seriously injured a tourist from Slovakia and another from the United States, a police officer said. Five other people suffered lesser injuries.
The canopy was designed to carry a 15-centimeter, or 6-inch, layer of earth to make it blend with the surrounding environment. (AFP)
