A brief history of the P.M. Nomikos Conference Center
In the beginning of the century, a neoclassical Mansion stood where the P.M. Nomikos Conference Center is located today. It was built with the characteristic red colour used for houses back then named ‘Red Houses’. It belonged to a distinguished Santorinian family who left the island. This mansion was used by these people as a house, a wine factory and part o a wine storage. Unfortunately, the 1956 earthquake irreparably damaged the building which was set to be demolished; the tunnels behind the main Conference Hall were ready to collapse.
Mr. P.M. Nomikos, the owner of the building, renovated the Mansion into a Conference Center, by maintaining its external architecture and traditional characteristics. Mr. P.M. Nomikos undertook this challenging renovation personally along with all its expenses. The architect Mr. Dimitris Koutsoudakis produced the panning of the renovation, along with the local contractor Mr. Panagiotis Roussos who manufactured and repaired the building. The impressive roof of the Main Conference Hall with the motifs of the city of Akrotiri, was painted by the illustrator Mr. Andreas Avdelopoulos.
The Conference Center first opened its doors in 1989, with the 3rd International Archeological Conference “Thera and the Aegean World”, organized by the Idryma Theras Petros M. Nomikos.
